Emerging from Joel Rea’s ongoing exploration of allegorical oil painting, Stay Beneath positions the Australian artist within a long historical lineage of painters preoccupied with the sublime, from the catastrophic seas of J. M. W. Turner and the metaphysical vastness of Caspar David Friedrich to the psychological dream logic of the Surrealists.
Yet rather than revisiting Romanticism nostalgically, Rea draws its central anxieties into the contemporary condition, replacing the lone wanderer before nature with figures submerged within emotional, ecological and existential uncertainty. The ocean no longer functions merely as landscape; it becomes a vast psychological force through which intimacy, vulnerability and human fragility are negotiated.
This tension between humanity and the natural world has long been central to Rea’s paintings. In 2019, his work was selected for Beautiful Bizarre Magazine’s Gaia Reborn: A Future Utopia, an international exhibition presented at the URBAN NATION Museum for Urban Contemporary Art in Berlin, examining humanity’s relationship with the Earth and the preservation of the natural world.
In Stay Beneath, nature is neither backdrop nor metaphor alone. The figures exist inside it: beautiful, vulnerable and momentarily held beneath something infinitely larger than themselves.
