Emerging from Joel Rea’s ongoing exploration of allegorical oil painting, “Stay Beneath”, positions himself within a long historical lineage of painters preoccupied with the sublime, from the catastrophic seas of Turner and the metaphysical vastness of Caspar David Friedrich, to the psychological dream logic of the surrealists.
Yet rather than revisiting Romanticism nostalgically, Rea drags its central anxieties into the contemporary condition, replacing the lone wanderer before nature with figures submerged inside emotional, ecological, and existential uncertainty itself. The ocean no longer functions merely as landscape; it becomes a vast psychological force field through which intimacy, vulnerability, and human fragility are negotiated.
