Speaking with Joel Rea about this painting, the conversation returned repeatedly to Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art and its notion of “Resistance”, the invisible force opposing meaningful work. Rea reflected on beginning his giant puppy series in his mid-twenties, recognising that the formative years of a life are disproportionately consequential. The puppies are monumental because their experiences are monumental; what enters consciousness during those early years continues to shape identity long after memory fades.
