In this monumental composition, Rea collapses surfing, mountaineering, aviation, and equestrian traditions into a single impossible landscape, constructing a vision where human ambition appears both heroic and absurd. The image resists stable narrative. A surfer clings to the wing of a smoking biplane in pursuit of a wave that behaves simultaneously as ocean, mountain, and existential threshold, an original and deliberately irrational gesture that transforms adventure into metaphysical theatre. Rather than depicting mastery over nature, Rea presents human experience as fragmented, unstable, and radically individualised.
What emerges is a meditation on the illusion of collective unity within contemporary life. Each figure inhabits the same environment yet appears locked within entirely separate psychological realities: the climber ascends, the surfer descends, the rider struggles forward, while others drift toward catastrophe or isolation. Rea suggests that beneath the surface mythologies of shared progress and cultural cohesion, human existence unfolds through profoundly unequal and disconnected experiences. The wave itself becomes symbolic of this condition, a singular force carrying every individual differently, without symmetry, fairness, or common destination.
