Joel Rea is an Australian contemporary surrealist painter known for highly detailed oil paintings exploring humanity's relationship with nature, consciousness and the sublime.
Rea has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and internationally, with exhibitions in London, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Singapore and Berlin. Since graduating from the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University in 2003, he has maintained a singular commitment to oil painting, developing a practice that has earned both critical recognition and a broad public following.
Over the past two decades, his paintings have been presented in museums, galleries, major art prizes and institutional exhibitions. His work has also appeared in group exhibitions alongside significant Australian artists including Jeffrey Smart, Norman Lindsay, Eugene von Guérard and James Gleeson, as well as internationally renowned artists Shepard Fairey, Ron English and Mark Ryden.
Rea's achievements include winning the ANL Maritime Art Award in Melbourne (2013), the People's Choice Award at the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture in Perth (2014), and the People's Choice Award at the Brisbane Portrait Prize (2019). He has also been a finalist in numerous prestigious Australian awards, including the Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, the Lester Prize for Portraiture, the Mosman Art Prize and the Fleurieu Art Prize.
Working within the tradition of contemporary surrealism, Rea creates meticulously rendered paintings that draw upon the grandeur of the natural world and the mysteries of the cosmos to explore themes of consciousness, mortality, resilience and transformation. His compositions examine the psychological landscape of the individual while reflecting broader questions of humanity's relationship with nature and the sublime. Balancing technical precision with emotional depth, his works merge contemporary symbolism with a timeless painterly sensibility.
Recurring motifs throughout Rea's practice include self-portraits, tigers, dogs, shafts of sunlight breaking through storm clouds and immense crashing waves. These symbols originate from formative experiences growing up along Australia's wild and unpredictable coastline, where encounters with the power of nature became the foundation of his visual language.

"Representational painting today is not what it used to be and cannot be dismissed as longing for the past or harkening back to the Romantics of the 19th century. Although Rea's work shares an aesthetic with Romanticism this is not about going back at all. They take from the past and move us toward tomorrow. He calls himself a Contemporary Surrealist Painter. Wikipedia describes Contemporary art as having developed from Postmodern art and although Joel Rea is very much alive and is dealing with issues of our present time, his work is far removed from the multimedia and purely conceptual work that has come to define Postmodernism and much of what is referred to as Contemporary art. To me Rea's work moves in a separate direction, one that is reconstructive, or Post Contemporary, as it places importance on craftsmanship and empathy. One thing for certain is that Rea's paintings speak in a language where such words are not needed at all. There need be no artspeak to accompany them, to tell the viewer what is happening.
